Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services: What Do They Really Do?

Program Summary

This workshop will cover the 12 programs that the state of Texas offers for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, their families, and service providers. Attendees may not be aware of all the resources available at the state and local level provided by the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (ODHHS). We will give an overview of: Driver ID program, STAP telephone assistance program, the Certificate of Deafness for Tuition Waiver, the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI), training, CEUS, advocacy, Resource Specialist services, assistive technology demonstration and assessments and much more.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Participants will be able to list at least 3 services offered by HHSC ODHHS.
  2. Participants will be able to list basic eligibility criteria for the Certificate of Deafness for Tuition Waiver program.
  3. Participants will be able to describe how the waiver program is different than Vocational Rehabilitation in terms of eligibility requirements and GPA requirements.
